Violin plots superimpose a kernel density plot on a box plot in order to provide more insight into the distribution of expressions in a sample. The box plot shows the median as a filled black square, the interquartile ranges as an unfilled black box, and the range of other non-outlier measurements as whiskers.

Violin Plot The violin plot, shown below, shows log-transferred expression level of selected gene across identified cell clusters by Hierarchical Clustering. A Feature Switcher helps to quickly navigate through the selected gene list. Each dot represents a single cell. Expression of selected genes in each cell is plotted on the axis by cluster.

Violin plots, which are visually and practically similar to box plots, can provide more detailed information about treatment distributions. These figures can use raw reads counts, but more commonly employ some normalization method that controls the range of data points for a more useful and visually appealing graphics.
