Engineered wood flooring looks similar to solid hardwood, but it is made mostly from a substrate (or subfloor) of plywood. This is then covered with a comparatively thin layer of hardwood that is bonded onto the surface. This kind of flooring is generally 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch thick, and is wider than solid hardwood.

A 1/2 sheet of plywood refers to the thickness of the sheet. While the name suggests it's 1/2 inch thick, it's actually 15/32 inches thick, as most plywood sheets are 1/32 thinner than the name suggests.
