Press the F1 key (with a smaller half-sun icon) to decrease your Surface keyboard light by one level. Press the key repeatedly (about 3-4 times) to turn off your keyboard backlight. Press the F2 key (with the bigger half-sun icon) to turn on the keyboard backlight or increase its brightness by one level.

Look for a backlit icon on one of the function keys (F1 to F12). It looks like a sun or a flashlight. Press the backlight key while holding the Function (Fn) key. Check the keyboard. If you see light coming from beneath each key, the keyboard light is activated. Adjust the brightness (optional).

To turn off the backlight in the Surface keyboard, press the key next to Esc key (see the image below). If you keep on pressing this key, you can see that the backlight intensity goes down until it switches off completely. If you want to turn it on, you can press and hold the key next to the key which you used to disable the backlight.

Press Windows and R keys together, then type in msinfo32. This link will help you Find out which Surface model you have. If you have the Surface Laptop 3, make sure that the Fn key is not illuminated. Once done, only press the F1 key (half-sun icon) to enable the keyboard backlight. This is next to the Esc key.

1. Type Control panel in the search bar and open it, then look for Windows mobility center. 2. Open Hardware and sound section. 3. Open the Windows Mobility Center, and you will see a few options. Move the slider under the Keyboard backlight tab to the left to turn off the backlight.
