  1. Dottybacks are fairly easy to breed in the home aquarium environment given the right conditions and adequate tank space. When spawning, the male of the species will perform a mating dance outside his cave and try to entice the female inside. Once the female approves of the male’s dance, she will enter the cave and lay up to a 1000 eggs.

If you have a pair, then spawning should happen regularly in a healthy aquarium. You will need to maintain the perfect water conditions and supply a highly nutritious diet. The male will court the female. If accepted, the female will deposit her eggs in the male’s territory for him to fertilize.

The male performs his mating dance outside his cave trying to excite the female. The female will enter the male's cave, once it accepts the male's dance. Depending on species, up to 1000 or more eggs are first laid by the female, and then fertilized by the male. The egg sack is negatively buoyant and is adhered to the inside of the males cave.

The male fish entices the female into spawning by performing a mating dance outside their home This is normally a cave or PVC pipe that you have provided for them to breed inside. If the female accepts the male’s advances, she will enter the chosen breeding area and deposit several hundred eggs, which are simultaneously fertilized by the male.
