Megalodons were sharks with rough skin and many rows of sharp teeth. They had large dorsal and pectoral fins. Their bodies were wider and more robust than blue whales. Blue whales have blowholes for breathing air, while megalodons had gills for getting oxygen from water. This key difference affected how they lived and hunted in the ocean.

While not a shark, blue whales are significantly larger than both megalodons and whale sharks by quite the margin. Blue whales aren’t just the largest animals alive today, they are the largest animals to have ever lived on the earth. If megalodons were around today, blue whales would be larger by a significant margin.

The blue whale’s biggest asset is its size. Being the biggest animal in the world, it has few enemies. We can’t even be sure if the megalodon would have tried taking down a blue whale. That said, the megalodon has better offensive tactics and senses. It also has teeth and a strong bite force. Overall, the odds are in the megalodon’s favor.

Believe it or not, the blue whale is able to tip the scale in both size and weight compared to the megalodon. If we examine the largest megalodon size estimates, they max out at about 227,510 pounds – more than 2 Stonehenge Sarsen stones. However, at a minimum average weight of 290,000 pounds, the blue whale dwarfs these prehistoric sharks.
