Major energy company Shell and Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority deployed clean-up measures after a leak from a land-based pipeline, they said on Sunday.

An oil pipeline belonging to British giant Shell began leaking into the sea on Sunday, Singaporean authorities said, adding that the spill was stopped and cleanup crews deployed.

Singapore agencies said on Tuesday they were making progress in cleaning up an oil leak and there had been no new sightings of oil at sea or onshore as of 3 p.m. (0700 GMT).

Shell and Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority initiated clean-up efforts following a pipeline leak. The spill, stopped at its source with no threat to navigation, prompted Shell to deploy booms and emergency responders.

Singapore said it was alerted to an oil leakage from a Shell land-based pipeline early Sunday, and steps have been taken to clean up the spill.

Shell said on Tuesday that most of the oil leak from a land-based pipeline at Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore on Bukom island had been cleaned up, with only small patches of light sheens around the island and Bukom Kechil remaining.
