Saffir-Simpson Scale explained
Why there isn’t a Category 6 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale
Hurricane Milton is becoming a Category 5 hurricane as it continues to intensify. Is it possible for it to reach Category 6? Here's what experts say.
Is a Category 6 Hurricane Possible? The Storm Scale Explained
“MILTON RAPIDLY INTENSIFIES INTO A CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE,” the NHC announced. “Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that Milton has strengthened to a category 5. The max sustained winds are estimated to be 160 mph with higher gusts.”
Could Hurricane Milton become a Category 6? Why does the NHC's scale stop at 5?
But that kind of rapid intensification is frightening. If it keeps going, would Category 5 be enough to describe it? Do we need to add a Category 6? Some experts say yes, but don't expect to see one any time soon.
