One Direction and The X Factor are mourning the death of Liam Payne. After Payne died on Wednesday, members of the beloved former pop boy band and the UK competition show where they got their start reacted to Payne’s death with heartfelt tributes.

Katie Waissel is a singer-songwriter who competed in The X Factor in 2010 – the same series in which One Direction formed. In response to Liam Payne’s death, she has written several posts on X criticising Simon Cowell and calling out “the urgent need for change in the music industry”.

Boyband JLS have said former One Direction star Liam Payne was like their “original fifth member”. The singer, 31, who found fame on The X Factor, died after falling from the balcony of his third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
