The case sparked nationwide anger at the chronic issue of violence against women in India, with some one million doctors walking off the job in protest.

Indian police on Monday charged a man with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor, a crime which appalled the country and triggered wide-scale protests. The discovery of the doctor’s bloodied body at a government hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata on August 9 sparked nationwide anger at the chronic issue of violence against women.

Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the Kolkata rape and murder case, was arrested on August 10 by the Kolkata Police. On the orders of the High Court, the CBI had took over the case from Kolkata Police.

The victim's post-mortem confirmed that she had been raped and murdered, revealing 25 internal and external injuries on her body.
