The Indian government is considering selling minority stakes in four state-run banks to comply with public shareholding norms mandated by the country's markets regulator, a government source told Reuters.

The government could sell stakes in Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, UCO Bank, and Punjab and Sind Bank.

The four banks in which the government could offload stakes are: Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, UCO Bank and Punjab and Sind Bank, the report said citing the source.

The Indian government is likely to extend the term of central bank governor Shaktikanta Das for a second time, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters, an unprecedented move that would make him the longest serving chief since the 1960s.

The government plans to sell minority stakes in four state-run banks — Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, UCO Bank, and Punjab and Sind Bank — to meet SEBI's 25% public shareholding norms, required by August 2026.
