I've resigned to the fact that only Garmin watch faces are efficient battery-wise as I've tested a number of really neat non-Garmin faces and invariably I end up with higher day-to-day battery consumption (around 1% per hour). When I revert back to "stock" the consumption drops back to less than .5% per hour.

I tried a few custom watch faces, but they either don't support displaying the seconds, or they "tick" irregulary and it was driving me crazy. Also I found that they display basically the same information as stock watch face, with hardly any advantage.
